FOSTERING GROWTH AND SUCCESS
– A MULTIDISCIPLINE APPROACH
By Daniel S. Maydeck, President and Chief Executive Officer
Located in the beautiful community of La Verne, California, rests two incredibly unique programs that combined have served communities across Southern California for over 175 years and recently expanded to additional communities across the State.
Haynes Family of Programs, Inc. (Haynes) and David & Margaret Youth and Family Services (David & Margaret) are two long‐established La Verne-based nonprofits whose 2021 strategic alliance has created an “end-to-end” continuum of care for vulnerable youth. The unique structure with common governance has created a footprint of success, common focus and adaptability, and the leveraging of combined resources.
Foundational elements that make us successful include having a board that provides proper oversight, effective fiscal management, and a top-level and creative leadership team.
Both organizations share a common mission to “strengthen and empower children, young adults, and families” through trauma-informed, culturally respectful treatment, education, and support. Haynes, founded as LeRoy Boys’ Home in 1946, specializes in residential, mental health, and school-based services for youth with emotional, learning, and developmental disabilities and a state-wide program that addresses the needs of students with educational deficits. David & Margaret began as the region’s first orphanage in 1910 and today offers foster care/adoption, transitional housing, and workforce training.
PROGRAMS & IMPACT
Over 110,000 youth and families have been positively impacted by our programs. Our impact continues to grow with over 5,000 youth and families served annually.
We are a premier provider of responsive programs in five service areas:
EDUCATION: Bliss Academy, for youth with autism; and Renaissance Community Prep/Joan Macy School for students with academic and behavioral needs are State-certified K-12 schools offering small class sizes and one-to-one aides. State-approved STAR Academy offers educational and behavioral experts working directly with students throughout California.
RESIDENTIAL: COMPASS Programs provide transition-age foster youth (ages 18-24) with safe housing, supportive services, and a Drop-In Center as they journey to independence.
Renaissance Residential is a nationally accredited treatment program for boys struggling with emotional challenges.
MENTAL HEALTH: Our therapeutic services help children and families learn to manage frustration, depression, and feelings of isolation.
FOSTER CARE & ADOPTION: Serenity and our long-term foster care program place children awaiting homes with approved foster families and assists with the adoption process.
WORKFORCE TRAINING: Dave & Maggie’s Center is a social enterprise open to the public that provides paid internships for transition-age foster youth.
CHANGE IS THE REAL FRONTIER – PHILOSOPHY FOR SURVIVAL
The survival of Haynes and David & Margaret despite decades of regulatory changes, funding pressures, and shifts in child welfare policy comes down to three major strategic factors.
- While many child-serving nonprofits struggled as government priorities changed, Haynes and David & Margaret expanded across multiple areas, including foster care, residential treatment, special education, transitional housing, autism services, vocational training, and family support. Our strategic plan explicitly emphasizes growing and diversifying programs and funding sources to meet changing community needs.
- Our community, governmental, and charitable partnerships have supported the needs of programs while offering enough diversity in funding to support the often-challenging fiscal environment. In recent years, program-service revenue has represented 60–65% of total revenue, while contributions have supplied a significant additional share. Organizations that depend entirely on one source are vulnerable.
- We embraced the major reforms, especially in California’s child welfare system, including the shift away from traditional group homes toward more therapeutic, family-centered, and trauma-informed models. Rather than resisting these changes, Haynes and David & Margaret repositioned programs around trauma-informed care, foster family recruitment, transition-age youth services, and therapeutic support.
CATALYST FOR SUCCESS
Our survival over the years does not mean the organization has been unaffected by challenges. We have survived because we continuously reinvent our services to match changing government policies and community needs while maintaining diversified funding, professional management, and a strong institutional reputation.
We are positioned to have a greater impact on the lives of children, youth, and families as we navigate forward.
